Report: Indiana Pacers to hire Rick Carlisle as head coach

It didn't take Rick Carlisle long to find his next coaching job.

According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the Indiana Pacers are hiring Carlisle to replace Nate Bjorkgren as the team's head coach.

Carlisle will sign a four-year, $29.0 million contract with the Pacers, MacMahon adds.

Following 13 seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, Carlisle revealed to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski this month that he wouldn't be returning as head coach next season.

"Dallas will always be home," Carlisle wrote, "but I am excited about the next chapter of my coaching career."

Carlisle returns to the Pacers, where he was an assistant coach for three seasons (1997-00) and a head coach for four seasons (2003-07).

With Carlisle as their head coach in the early 2000s, the Pacers posted a record of 181-147 and qualified for the playoffs three times, making it out of the first round twice.

The Pacers finished the 2020-21 season with a 34-38 record. They defeated the Charlotte Hornets in the first round of the Play-In Tournament before losing to the Washington Wizards for the Eastern Conference's No. 8 seed.
