By winning the 2020-21 Defensive Player of the Year award, Rudy Gobert becomes the fourth player in NBA history to win the award at least thrice. 

Introduced in the 1982-83 season, some of the greatest defenders in league history have earned the honour, with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace each winning the award a record four times.
