Today in NBA History: Dirk Nowitzki passes Wilt Chamberlain for 6th on all-time scoring charts & more

On March 18th, 2019, Dirk Nowitzki moved passed WIlt Chamberlain (31,419) for 6th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

The German climbed passed the Hall of Famer on the all-time scoring charts with his patented fadeaway jumper in the first quarter against the New Orleans Pelicans at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. For the game, which the Mavericks lost in overtime 129-125, Nowitzki finished with eight points (3-6 FGs), two assists and a rebound in 12 minutes.

At the end of the season, when the Dallas Mavericks superstar retired after 21 seasons in the league, he finished with 31,560 points after 1,522 regular-season games.

He is the highest-ranked internationally-born player on the all-time scoring charts with Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon a close second in the overall 11th spot.

  • In 1978, Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy scored a Houston Rockets franchise-record 57 points in a 106-104 loss to the New Jersey Nets. His record stood for nearly 40 years until James Harden broke it on January 30th, 2018 .
  • In 1988, the Golden State Warriors retire Rick Barry's #24. At that time, he was only the fourth player to have his jersey retired by the franchise after Al Attles, Tom Meschery, and Nate Thurmond.
  • In 1991, The Philadelphia 76ers retire Wilt Chamberlain's #13. At that time, his number was the sixth to be retired by the franchise (The Lakers had retired his #13 in 1983).
  • In 2001, in a 101-95 win against the Sacramento Kings, Reggie Miller became the first player in NBA history to make 2,000 3-pointers.
