This Date in NBA History (March 29): Hakeem Olajuwon becomes third player in NBA history to record a quadruple-double

On March 29, 1990, Hakeem Olajuwon created history, becoming just the third NBA player to record a quadruple-double.

Joining Nate Thurmond and Alvin Robertson, Olajuwon stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, and 11 blocks, in a 120-94 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Olajuwon nearly accomplished the feat twice in the same season, falling one assist shy earlier that month. Against the Golden State Warriors on March 3, Olajuwon recorded 28 points, 19 rebounds, 11 blocks and nine assists.

Four years later, San Antonio Spurs big man David Robinson would record the fourth - and last - quadruple-double in NBA history, dropping 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 blocks against the Detroit Pistons in 1994.

  • In 1952, Minneapolis center George Mikan scored a then NBA playoff record 47 points against the Rochester Royals in Game 1 of the Western Division Finals,
  • In 1960, Bill Russell hauled in an NBA Finals record 40 rebounds as the Celtics lost to St. Louis 113-103.
  • In 1962, in a loss against the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers' Elgin Baylor (45) and Jerry West (41) became the first teammates to both score 40 or more points in a playoff game
  • In 1998, the Indiana Pacers scored a then NBA record-low 55 points (since the introduction of the 24-second shot clock) in a 74-55 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. That record was broken the following season as the Bulls scored just 49 points vs. the Miami Heat.
  • In 2017, Russell Westbrook explodes for 57 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists, and three steals in a competitive overtime battle against the Magic in Orlando.
