Free Agency 2020

The five best point guards in the 2020 free agent class

Any team looking to add a point guard to their roster in the offseason will have several options.

While this year's point guard class in free agency isn't particularly deep, it's headlined by Fred VanVleet and features several veterans like Goran Dragic and Mike Conley.

Including them, here are the five best point guards in the 2020 free agent class.

MORE: Ranking the best players in free agency

1. Fred VanVleet, Toronto Raptors

Age: 26

Status: Unrestricted

Two years removed from being a finalist for Sixth Man of the Year, VanVleet started in all 48 games he appeared in prior to the season being suspended while posting career highs across the board of 17.6 points, 6.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game. He's still a limited finisher in the paint, but VanVleet has grown as a 3-point shooter off the dribble and was one of the league's best catch-and-shoot threats this season. He's also a disruptive defender, ranking third in the league with 1.9 steals per game and leading the way with 4.2 deflections per game.

2. Goran Dragic, Miami Heat

Age: 34

Status: Unrestricted

Dragic has thrived as a sixth man in Miami this season with averages of 16.1 points, 5.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game. He can play off-ball - a quarter of his shot attempts this season have been catch-and-shoot 3s and he's made 36.3 percent of those opportunities - and he's still among the league's best pick-and-roll scorers. He battled injuries last season, but Dragic has been mostly healthy this season, playing in 54 of Miami's 65 games entering the season restart in Orlando.

3. Mike Conley, Utah Jazz

Age: 32

Status: Player option

Conley's scoring is down to 13.8 points per game in his first season in Utah, his lowest total since 2011-12. He hasn't been able to make the impact many expected him to when the Jazz traded for him in the offseason. Any team making a move for him will be hoping that he can recapture some of last season's magic when he averaged a career-best 21.1 points per game on 43.8 percent shooting from the field and 36.4 percent from 3-point range. Conley has a $34.5 million player option in his contract for next season.

4. Jeff Teague, Atlanta Hawks

Age: 32

Status: Unrestricted

Teague split this season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Hawks. He started in only 17 games with both teams, which is the least amount of games he's started in since his sophomore season. Teague is still an efficient pick-and-roll scorer, decent passer and capable 3-point shooter.

5. D.J. Augustin, Orlando Magic

Age: 32

Status: Unrestricted

Augustin was moved to the bench this season to pave the way for Markelle Fultz to start at point guard. His numbers haven't taken much of a hit, but he's struggled with efficiency at times, shooting only 39.3 percent from the field on the season. Even so, Augustin is one of the better 3-point shooters available at point guard and is a solid playmaker.

Honourable mention

Kris Dunn, Chicago Bulls (Restricted free agent) - Dunn has developed into one of the league's best defenders at the guard position, possibly earning an All-Defence selection this season.

Rajon Rondo, Los Angeles Lakers (Player option) - Rondo isn't the player he once was, but he's still a strong passer and is capable of knocking down open 3s.

Isaiah Thomas (Unrestricted) - Thomas had some moments with the Wizards this season, starting in 37 games while averaging 12.2 points and 3.7 assists.

Reggie Jackson, LA Clippers (Unrestricted) - It's been a tough couple of seasons for Jackson, but he has an opportunity to prove himself as a backup on a team that could win it all in Orlando.

Michael Carter-Williams, Orlando Magic (Unrestricted) - Like Dunn, Carter-Williams has his limitations on offence but has developed into a versatile defender.
