The San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday that assistant coach Becky Hammon has been promoted. Hammon replaces James Borrego, who was hired as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets on May 10.

Hammon, one of six assistants on Gregg Popovich's staff in the 2017-18 season, joined the Spurs coaching staff in 2014 after a 16-year playing career in the WNBA.

In past years, she was one of the assistants that sat directly behind the Spurs bench. The promotion means she will sit alongside Popovich beginning in the 2018-19 season.

Hammon served as head coach of the Spurs Las Vegas Summer League teams in 2015 and 2016 and led the team to the Summer League Championship in 2015. Earlier this offseason, she interviewed for the Milwaukee Bucks head coaching vacancy.
