Report: Houston Rockets to hire Stephen Silas to become next head coach

The Houston Rockets have reportedly tabbed their next head coach.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Houston is finalizing a deal with Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Stephen Silas to become its next head coach.

According to Wojnarowski, the Rockets were impressed with Silas' offensive acumen and resume of guards with which he has worked that includes the likes of Baron Davis, Stephen Curry, Kemba Walker and Luka Doncic.

Silas now assumes the lead of a Rockets team that features the All-Star backcourt of Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

The son of former NBA player and head coach Paul Silas, Stephen Silas brings 20 years of NBA coaching experience as he got his coaching start as an assistant with the Charlotte Hornets under his father in 2000. From there, Silas remained an assistant once the team relocated to New Orleans before joining his father's staff with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After two seasons in Cleveland, Silas spent a season as a scout with the Washington Wizards before serving as an assistant coach with Don Nelson and the Golden State Warriors from 2006-10.

He returned as an assistant in Charlotte from 2010-18, where he served as an interim head coach during the 2011-12 season as well as the 2017-18 season before moving on to Dallas, where he spent the last two seasons.

Last season, Houston earned the West's No. 4 seed with a 42-30 record, losing in five games in the Western Conference Semifinals to the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers. Shortly after, head coach Mike D'Antoni stepped down from his post, informing Rockets' brass that he would be entering free agency.
