The Philadelphia 76ers earned the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last season and return this season with their roster mostly intact.

Philadelphia opens the 2021-22 season on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when it travels to take on the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center.

Key additions and subtractions

The 76ers didn't see much roster overturn from their 2020-21 season, bringing back mostly the same squad.

They re-signed Joel Embiid to a max extension and Furkan Kormaz to a three-year deal, while adding Andre Drummond, Grant Riller and Georges Niang in free agency and waiving Rayjon Tucker, Anthony Tolliver and George Hill.

In the 2021 NBA Draft, they selected Jaden Springer with the No. 28 overall pick, Filip Petrusev (50th) and Charles Bassey (53rd).

Positional battles

The 76ers will take the same starting five into the season opener, but there are a few key positional battles for playing time.

Tyrese Maxey, who averaged 15.3 minutes per game in his rookie season, will make a strong case for more playing time at backup point guard, vying for those minutes with Shake Milton.

Matisse Thybulle started just eight of his 65 games last season, but as he continues to develop his outside shot, he will be putting plenty of pressure on head coach Doc Rivers to throw him into the starting group. Of Philly's best five-man lineups last season (min. 15 games played), Thybulle featured in three of the top four for net rating.
