Report: NBA to experiment with challenge flag

#adam silver

Tired of watching referees at the replay monitor? Well, get used to potentially seeing more of it because the NBA is going to experiment with the use of challenge flags during the Summer League this year.

The reports stated Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Kiki VanDeWeghe confirmed the procedure would make its debut during the summer with the indication off possibly inserting it into the regular season.

NBA referees often get criticized more heavily than other sports officials, but a challenge flag seems like a risky decision. Pace of play in sports has taken a huge hit with replay being implemented. Baseball, especially, has struggled with long games.

Basketball is a sport reliant on its flow, with fans typically enjoying an up-and-down the court style. The NBA already plays slow, with guards often walking the ball up the court and then running iso offences. Challenge flags could erase any flow still in existence.

While the move hasn't been made official, and would for now just be in the Summer League, it's scary to think of NBA having an even slower pace.
