Kyrie Irving tells Boston crowd: 'I plan on re-signing here'

#Irving

Boston Celtics fans can breathe a sigh of relief after Kyrie Irving's latest announcement.

The All-Star point guard who joined the Celtics prior to the 2017/18 season spoke at the teams fan event for season ticket holders.

Irving stated "If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here" as the crowd erupted into cheers.

The Athletic's Shams Charania also confirmed that Irving had been in talks with Boston ownership and had verbally committed to plans of sticking around long-term.

Irving's announcement means his name can be removed from the list of 2019 free agents. A list which includes Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler.

Keeping Irving is a huge boost for the Celtics who are looking to rule the Eastern Conference in the wake of LeBron James' departure.

Boston's 2018/19 season will commence on October 17 when they open the season against the Philadelphia 76ers.
