MORE: Which current NBA players would you pick to star alongside LeBron James in Space Jam 2?

After plenty of speculation, LeBron James confirmed at NBA All-Star Weekend in Charlotte, that filming for Space Jam 2 will commence in the off-season.

James will of course star as the lead, while also serving as an executive producer for the film, which is being brought to life by his prduction company Springhill Entertainment and Warner Bros.

In September 2018, it was announced that director Terence Nance had signed on for the project, along with 'Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler who will produce the film, with James explaining to the Hollywood Reporter that Coogler was the perfect choice to re-imagine the 1996 cult classic.

"I loved his vision for Black Panther," James said. "So for Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it's amazing."

"The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie," James added. "It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people."

In 2015, SpringHill Entertainment teamed up with Warner Bros, fuelling speculation that a sequel was on the way and as kick-off for production draws nearer, players around the league are already putting their hands up to join the James-led cast.

The original film saw Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan team up with the Looney Tunes to take on the Monstars in a game of basketball, however details of the premise for Space Jam 2 have yet to be revealed.
