Kelly Olynyk injury update: Canadian forward out 'at least six weeks' with Grade 2 MCL sprain

The Detroit Pistons will be without Kelly Olynyk (Kamloops, BC) for an extended period of time.

The team announced that the Canadian forward suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain, an injury that occurred in the fourth quarter of the Pistons' game against the Houston Rockets.

In Wednesday's game, Olynyk played 27 minutes off the bench to finish with 13 points, six rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. Until this injury, Olynyk had played nine of his 10 games off the bench with averages of 12.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 23 minutes of action.

The 30-year-old is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, signing with the Pistons as a free agent this past offseason on a three-year, $37 million contract.

Olynyk was at his best when he was traded from the Miami Heat to the Rockets at the deadline last season, averaging 19.0 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists during his time in Houston.

The injury to the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft should free up some minutes for another Canadian in Trey Lyles, who is only averaging 15.7 minutes per game to this point in the season.

Olynyk's absence will be a tough blow to the Pistons, who are struggling with a young roster to start the season, owning a 2-8 record.
