Charles Barkley, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and current analyst with Turner Sports, has pledged $1 million to Tuskegee University, the school announced recently.

Tuskegee University, a historically black college and university (HBCU) located in Tuskegee, AL, is Barkley's fifth major donation to an HBCU, following $1 million pledges to Miles College, Alabama A&M-Huntsville, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College.

Barkley's pledge is through Capital One's The Match: Champions for Change, which is a golf event that features prominent athletes and seeks to raise awareness of HBCUs.

A native of Leeds, AL, Barkley spent his collegiate career at Auburn University, located less than 30 minutes away from Tuskegee University, meaning there was plenty of preexisting familiarity. Barkley told al.com "I've been there a million times."

While the gift is unrestricted, Barkley added that the hope is for the money to go towards academic scholarships (per al.com).

Thus continues widespread efforts from Barkley, who has expressed concern about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Black students. According to al.com, Barkley donated 200 computers to his former high school in Leeds and AT&T donated a year of free wireless Internet access to the students.

Barkley, the No. 5 overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft, spent 16 NBA seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets. An 11-time All-Star and 11-time All-NBA selection, Barkley was named league MVP following the 1992-93 NBA season. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2006.

Tuskegee University, located in Tuskegee, AL, is a private, state-related and nationally ranked land-grant institution that serves a racially, ethnically and religiously diverse student body of 3,000-plus students. The institution was founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington.

Capital One's The Match takes place on Friday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. ET on TNT, with additional content available on Bleacher Report.
