Hall of fame coach John Thompson has passed away at the age of 78, his family and friends confirmed to ABC 7 News in Washington, D.C. early Monday morning.

Thompson served as the head coach of Georgetown University from 1972-99, leading the Hoyas to 20 NCAA Tournament appearances in his 27 seasons at the helm. In 1984, Thompson led Georgetown to its lone national title, becoming the first African-American head coach to lead a team to an NCAA Division I Championship in any sport.

He also led a United States National Team that featured Mitch Richmond, Danny Manning and David Robinson to a Bronze Medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.

During his tenure at Georgetown, Thompson coached over 25 players that would make it to the NBA, including Hall of Famers Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning and Allen Iverson.

Following his coaching career, Thompson spent time as an NBA analyst and was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 1999.

Thompson's passing is a monumental loss for the basketball world.

Very sad news to wake up to on this cloudy morning. Our legendary Georgetown coach, John Thompson has passed away. He was my mentor, great teacher, hero and a father figure to so many us who got the chance to play for him. Under coach Thompson, I learned a lot about the game of basketball but most importantly, I learned how to be a man in society. We will really miss him. RIP coach. 💔💔💔
