The Canadian Men's National Team begins its pursuit of a berth in the Tokyo Olympic Games with a group stage meeting against Greece.
While Greece had three tune-ups in the Acropolis International Basketball Tournament from June 18-20, Canada has only had live five-on-five action during training camp to prepare for the upcoming tournament. In Greece's final friendly match, it suffered a 75-64 loss to Serbia last Sunday.
In the loss, Greece was led by 17 points and 10 rebounds from Konstantinos Mitoglou, who recently joined Italian club AJX Olimpia Milano. While Mitoglou could prove to be an X-Factor, the guy to keep an eye on is 6-foot-6 point guard Nick Calathes, who averaged 13.4 points during the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Calathes, who spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies, is one of three members of the Greek national team with NBA experience, the others being Kostas Antetokounmpo and Georgios Papagiannis, who was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
Canada has the advantage from an NBA talent perspective, with 10 players who have NBA experience, including two former No. 1 overall picks in Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins.
While this Canada team may lack in-game experience over the past few weeks, it will look to make up for it with its talent while getting on the same page. Tuesday's game opens up play in Group A, where each of the three teams within will face one another once, with the top two teams advancing to the tournament's final four.
Here's the schedule for Group A:
|Tuesday, June 29||Canada vs. Greece||7:05 p.m.|
|Wednesday, June 30||China vs. Canada||7:05 p.m.|
|Thursday, July 1||Greece vs. China||7:05 p.m.|
There will be a quick turnaround for Canada. The opener is the front end of a back-to-back, as it will take the floor again to face China on Wednesday.
