Nick Nurse and the Toronto Raptors are still heavily in celebration mode after securing their first ever NBA championship.

But the coach is now poised to take the reigns of Team Canada as they begin preparations for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Nurse took over in 2018/19 as the coach of the Raptors in his first ever season in the NBA. Prior to being elevated he was an assistant for several years with the Raptors.

The news of Nurse's potential announcement comes on the heels of Andrew Wiggins committing to Canada.

At Toronto's first media availability after their championship victory Nurse effectively confirmed his role as the Canadian team coach.

"I'm getting ready to take another situation soon because I think it's going to make me a better coach," Nurse said.

Nurse said a deal was "just about done" and it was something he said he was "looking forward to doing".

Canada kick off tournament play against Australia on September 1, then play Lithuania on September 3 before closing out the group stage against Senegal on September 5.

"It's a unique time with the World Cup and the Olympics within a short 13- to 14-month window. And it fits in OK. I'm just giving up some vacation time," Nurse said.

The 32-team 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup competition will be held from 31 August - 15 September in China. Eight cities will host World Cup games - Beijing, Foshan, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Nanjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Canada will play five games in Australia as warm-ups ahead of the World Cup.
