Elena Delle Donne, A'ja Wilson named captains for WNBA All-Star 2019, Canadian Kia Nurse to make first appearance


The 2019 WNBA All-Stars were announced on Thursday.

Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics was the leading vote getter and will captain one team. A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces will be the other captain after finishing second in the voting.

Canadian Kia Nurse will make her first All-Star appearance and start after being selected as a guard. She finished fourth in the fan portion of the vote, sixth in the media ballot and third amongst players for the guard spot for a combined score of 4.25, edging out Odyssey Sims of the Minnesota Lynx.

The 10th pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft is averaging 16.0 points per game for the New York Liberty, good for seventh in the league.

The All-Star starters were selected by a combination of fan votes, current WNBA players and media. The fan vote accounted for 50% while the players and media were 25% apiece.

Liz Cambage (Aces), Chelsea Gray (Sparks), Brittney Griner (Mercury), Natasha Howard (Storm), Jonquel Jones (Sun), Jewell Loyd (Storm) and Kayla McBride (Aces) are the other players voted into the game as starters.

The game will be played on Saturday, July 27 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, home of the Aces.

The 12 reserves for the All-Star Game will be chosen by the league's head coaches and will be announced on Monday, July 15.

Coaches will vote for three guards, five frontcourt players and four players at either position regardless of conference.
