Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic 'might be able to return within a couple of weeks' after spraining ankle

After sustaining a 'moderate right ankle sprain' against the Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic will likely miss the team's upcoming stretch of big games.

According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, the 20-year-old "might be able to return within a couple of weeks" as he recovers from and rehabilitates his ankle injury.

As MacMahon notes, this recovery timeline means that Doncic will miss the upcoming stretch that includes a number of big tests for the Mavericks, as the next five games are:

  • Dec. 16 at Milwaukee
  • Dec. 18 vs. Boston
  • Dec. 20 at Philadelphia
  • Dec. 22 at Toronto
  • Dec. 26 vs. San Antonio

With the Mavericks' meeting against Giannis Antetokounpmo and the Bucks being a one-game road trip, MacMahon also reported that Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle informed reporters that Doncic "will not travel to Milwaukee due to a right ankle sprain. He will stay in Dallas with Casey Smith and receive treatment."

Carlisle added that "there will be no further updates until Wednesday night."

Doncic's injury came less than two minutes into the Mavericks overtime loss to the Heat. Dallas is now 17-8 on the season and is currently in the top half of the Western Conference Playoff Picture 25 games into the season.

With a tough stretch coming up, the Mavs will look to stay afloat without Doncic, who leads the team in scoring (29.6 ppg), rebounding (9.6 rpg) and assists (8.9 apg).

More updates to come as they become available…
