The Celtics prevailed Wednesday night in a wild 114-112 win that came down to the final possession, setting Boston up for an Eastern Conference finals rematch with the Cavs.

Game 5 saw several lead changes, insane shots and clutch plays - and that was just the fourth quarter. A late layup from Jayson Tatum and strip of Joel Embiid by Terry Rozier turned the tables in Boston's favor, and Philadelphia was unable to recapture the lead despite a valiant effort.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 49 points, and Marcus Smart provided a spark off the bench with 14 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals. Joel Embiid and Dario Saric each scored 27 points for the Sixers in the loss.

Game 5 box score | Play-by-play

Final: Celtics 114, 76ers 112

10:56 p.m. ET - Marcus Smart misses the first free throw, then makes the second AFTER he tried to miss it intentionally. Ben Simmons tried to throw a Hail Mary pass, but Smart intercepted it and ran out the clock.

Wow. The Celtics are heading back to the Eastern Conference finals.

Sure Not Now

10:53 p.m. ET - Terry Rozier is fouled, and he hits both free throws to make it a two-possession game. JJ Redick answers with a deep 3-pointer at the other end. This one is not over.

Celtics 113, 76ers 112 with 3.8 seconds to go. Philadelphia needs to foul to stop the clock, then get the ball up the floor quickly. Brett Brown has not timeouts.

10:50 p.m. ET - Joel Embiid misses a shot close to the basket and corrals the offensive rebound, but he's stripped by Terry Rozier. The ball goes off Embiid's leg out of bounds, and the Celtics take over. Only 10.8 seconds remaining...

10:47 p.m. ET - Jayson Tatum cuts through the lane for the open layup! Boston up by two!

Celtics 111, 76ers 109 with 18.8 seconds left. This could be the final possession of the game - and the series.

10:40 p.m. ET - Dario Saric gives the Sixers the lead! A 3-pointer from the right wing pushes Philadelphia in front of Boston. Only two minutes to go...

10:34 p.m. ET - The Celtics are back on top after a 10-0 run. Boston is ahead 100-94 with 5:27 on the clock. Al Horford is providing a steady hand, as usual.

10:24 p.m. ET - These Sixers will not quit. Philadelphia has a two-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the game. You have got to be impressed with the effort of this young team.

10:19 p.m. ET - Jaylen Brown has been terrific in Game 5. He has scored 24 points (10-of-13 from the field), including the first five of the final frame.

End of third quarter: Celtics 83, 76ers 82

10:10 p.m. ET - With a late surge, the Sixers close the gap and stay within striking distance. Joel Embiid carried Philly in that quarter, making a huge impact on both ends. He's got 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocks so far. Let's see how much fatigue comes into play, because he expended a lot of energy.

9:59 p.m. ET - OK, this third quarter has just been full of ridiculous shots. Jaylen Brown went full acrobat.

9:48 p.m. ET - Not to be outdone, Aron Baynes with some fancy footwork of his own...

9:44 p.m. ET - What kind of sorcery is this?!

9:35 p.m. ET - It doesn't appear that hamstring injury is affecting Jaylen Brown. He's got five quick points to start the second half. Nothing wrong with that outside shot.

Halftime: Celtics 61, 76ers 52

9:19 p.m. ET - The Celtics lead by nine after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Terry Rozier. Boston really flexed its muscles to end that half. Jayson Tatum has a game-high 14 points, but it's been more than a one-man show. Six Celtics players have at least eight points. Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and T.J. McConnell are once driving the offense for the 76ers, but they'll need their shooters to contribute in the final two quarters if they want to avoid elimination.

9:07 p.m. ET - What a fake by Ben Simmons. That's exactly the kind of play he made all season long, and it should make Sixers fans happy.

9:02 p.m. ET - Joel Embiid keeps getting buckets. The big man is hitting near the basket and from midrange. It will be interesting to see if he can sustain this level of shooting (5-of-7 from the field) as the game progresses.

8:53 p.m. ET - Jayson Tatum is looking to attack on almost every possession. He's got 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. The Sixers have McConnell matched up with him, but he's too small to contest Tatum's jumper.

End of first quarter: Celtics 25, 76ers 24

8:45 p.m. ET - A fun, competitive opening period. Both teams are benefiting from a balanced scoring attack. Six different players have scored at least five points so far, including Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who added two points to his total with this impressive alley-oop slam.

8:36 p.m. ET - Ben Simmons throws it down WITH AUTHORITY.

8:27 p.m. ET - The Sixers rattle off a 7-0 run to gain an early 14-10 lead. How about a little high-low action?

8:20 p.m. ET - Jaylen Brown is off to a fast start. He scores six of Boston's first eight points. This game already has a good pace going.

8:07 p.m. ET - The 76ers stick with the same starters from Game 4: Ben Simmons, JJ Redick, T.J. McConnell, Dario Saric and Joel Embiid. The Celtics will push Jaylen Brown into the starting lineup and bring Marcus Smart off the bench.

7:54 p.m. ET - JJ Redick has hit only 35.5 percent of his 3-pointers against the Celtics, well below his regular season percentage (42.0). A hot night from him would improve the Sixers' odds of forcing a Game 6.
