2021 NBA All-Star: NBA.com Global Staff picks their reserves

The starters for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game have been announced.

Next up, the reserves.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, the reserves for this season's All-Star Game will be revealed on TNT. The starters were voted on by the fans, players and media, whereas the NBA's head coaches will select the reserves.

Ahead of the announcement, our NBA.com Staff weighs in on who they believe should hear their name called on Tuesday.

Western Conference reserves

Scott Rafferty Kyle Irving Benyam Kidane Yash Matange
Guard Damian Lillard Damian Lillard Damian Lillard Damian Lillard
Guard Donovan Mitchell Donovan Mitchell Donovan Mitchell Donovan Mitchell
Frontcourt Paul George Paul George Paul George Paul George
Frontcourt Anthony Davis Anthony Davis Anthony Davis Zion Williamson
Frontcourt Rudy Gobert Rudy Gobert Rudy Gobert Rudy Gobert
Wildcard Chris Paul Chris Paul Devin Booker Chris Paul
Wildcard Zion Williamson Zion Williamson Zion Williamson Devin Booker

Scott Rafferty (@crabdribbles): Three tough omissions for me: DeMar DeRozan, Devin Booker and De'Aaron Fox. They were each in the mix for the final wildcard spot, but I ultimately went with Williamson. Sure, Williamson still has a long way to go defensively, but there aren't many players who put as much pressure as he does on teams offensively. He gets to the basket at will and is almost impossible to stop when he gets downhill. He's even scarier now that the New Orleans Pelicans have turned him into a point forward.

Kyle Irving (@KyleIrv_): Picking between Paul and Booker as Phoenix's representative was my toughest decision, but leaving DeRozan out when the San Antonio Spurs have been one of the best teams in the West doesn't feel right either. As good as Booker (and Fox) have been, I think that if a player is going to replace the injured Davis on the All-Star team, DeRozan gets my vote.

Benyam Kidane (@BenyamKidane): It was a tough pick between the Suns backcourt duo of Paul and Booker, but I'm giving the slight edge to Booker. The next wildcard spot came down to Williamson, Fox and DeRozan, but Williamson's historic numbers put him over the top.

Yash Matange (@yashmatange2694): I've got both Booker and Paul on the roster. The one spot that opens up for me is AD, who hasn't been as impressive this season as the jump by Booker and the impact of CP3. In addition, the Suns and Lakers are only a couple of games apart in the standings, so if we are to give a team two All-Stars, it could be the Suns. The rest of the picks were no-brainers as my colleagues detailed above.

Eastern Conference reserves

Scott Rafferty Kyle Irving Benyam Kidane Yash Matange
Guard James Harden James Harden James Harden James Harden
Guard Jaylen Brown Jaylen Brown Jaylen Brown Jaylen Brown
Frontcourt Jayson Tatum Jayson Tatum Jayson Tatum Jayson Tatum
Frontcourt Khris Middleton Domantas Sabonis Domantas Sabonis Domantas Sabonis
Frontcourt Bam Adebayo Julius Randle Julius Randle Julius Randle
Wildcard Ben Simmons Ben Simmons Ben Simmons Khris Middleton
Wildcard Zach LaVine Trae Young Zach LaVine Zach LaVine

Rafferty: Once again, the last wildcard spot is a tough one. Lots of deserving candidates, from Young and Fred VanVleet in the backcourt to Randle, Sabonis and Nikola Vucevic in the frontcourt. (Jimmy Butler is also a strong candidate. I get why he's not getting more buzz - he's only appeared in 18 games - but he's been really good in the games he has played, especially as of late). On the eve of the reserves being announced, I'm leaning a little more towards LaVine. The fact that the Chicago Bulls have a better net rating with him on the bench gives me some pause, but based on the way he's played this season, it feels weird to not have him a part of the 12-man All-Star roster.

Irving: The East was way tougher to decipher than the West for me. It was nearly impossible to pick from the group of Sabonis, Randle, Middleton, Adebayo and Vucevic for the remaining two forward reserve spots, and that's not even including other deserving candidates like Gordon Hayward or Jerami Grant. The final guard spot was a tough task, too, as it felt disrespectful to leave off LaVine after electing to go with Young.

Kidane: It was tough to leave out Hayward, Adebayo, Vucevic, Middleton and Butler off the wildcard spots, but the 76ers deserve two All-Stars being top of the East, so Simmons gets the nod. As for the other wildcard spot, LaVine's consistent game-winning performances made it impossible to leave him out. The toughest call, however, was Young. While he was an All-Star starter last season and his numbers haven't necessarily dipped that much, the depth of talent in the East has just skyrocketed this season.

Matange: With the East far more bunched up together, it was certainly far tougher to pick the reserves in the East than the West. Having said that, Harden, both the Celtics, LaVine and Randle were locks for me. I have just loved the jumps that LaVine and Randle have taken - both have willed their teams to wins multiple times this season. I picked Middleton over Simmons because the former is averaging near career-highs on near 50-40-90 shooting percentages while serving as the Bucks' primary playmaker at times. On the other hand, Simmons is averaging 15-8-8, but the 76ers seem far more balanced and dependent on MVP candidate Embiid. In addition, Milwaukee is just three games behind Philadelphia while doing a lot more experimenting in this regular season. Among my emissions, the toughest were Adebayo and Young.
